Starbucks App: Simplifying the User Journey Through a UI Redesign

Overview.

The Starbucks app is widely used around the world, but even popular platforms can suffer from usability and visual design challenges. This redesign project was a self-initiated exercise to explore ways the app’s user interface could be improved for a more seamless and visually consistent experience.

While not a full UX case study, this project focused on identifying key design pain points — such as cluttered layouts, inconsistent UI elements, and unclear user flows — and reimagining them with more intuitive, visually cohesive solutions.

The goal was to enhance usability, improve hierarchy, and modernize the look and feel of the app, all while maintaining Starbucks’ core brand identity. This UI-focused exploration includes a problem-solution structure, visual redesigns, and thoughtful rationale behind each design decision.

Reflection & Next Steps.

This project allowed me to explore how thoughtful UI improvements can enhance the everyday usability of a globally recognised app. By identifying design inconsistencies and reworking key flows — such as sign-in, location selection, and drink customisation — I focused on improving clarity, visual hierarchy, and overall user comfort.

While the redesign was primarily interface-driven, the process sharpened my ability to:

  • Identify pain points from a visual UX perspective

  • Align UI solutions with brand tone and customer expectations

  • Prioritise simplicity without sacrificing personality

Next Steps.

If extended further, this concept could evolve through:

  • User testing to validate assumptions and fine-tune usability

  • Expanding into a full design system for consistency and scalability

  • Adding microinteractions and motion to enrich the user experience

  • Considering accessibility improvements to ensure inclusivity across all users
